Real estate board hands out more than $10K to eight local charities

'It's such a perfect fit'

The Sudbury Real Estate Board distributed done $11,500 to eight local charities this holiday season.

The charities that benefited focus largely on providing shelter-related services to those in need of them.

“It is such a perfect fit ... to help support these charities since the heart of our industry is helping people find homes,” said Caroline McDonald, interim board president.

In the last decade, members' contributions have seen more than $56,000 given back to the community, the board said in a news release this week.

Recipients this year included Sudbury Y.W.C.A Genevra House and Sudbury Kinsmen Family Centre Foundation.

“These funds help us provide emergency shelter for women and children and a safe place to help them heal and rebuild their lives,” said  Genevra House Executive Director Marlene Gorman.

“We are delighted to receive this first-time donation (as) we rely extensively on grants, donations and caring supporters,” said Mike Allard, president of the Sudbury Kinsmen Family Centre Foundation / House of Kin.

The other charities selected for the grant were Sudbury Manitoulin Children’s Foundation, Inner City Home of Sudbury, Mason McCulloch Hospice, March of Dimes Non-Profit Housing Corporation, Pregnancy Care & Infant Food Bank, and Canadian Mental Health Association (Sudbury/Manitoulin).
