Flood victim and Lautoka Women’s Corrections Centre custodial officer, COC Natasha Tupou, said they were all caught by surprise.

Fiji Corrections Service personnel at national headquarters in Suva this week got together to assist six of their fellow officers from the Western Division who lost almost everything during the recent floods.

The basic items collected, ranged from beddings, clothing to kitchen equipment, were presented to them.

They were also handed a cheque each to further assist them from the the Fiji Corrections Welfare Fund.

A special group, led by the Deputy Commissioner Joe Kulinidilo, comprised of FCS Chaplain Josefa Tikonatabua, Assistant Commissioner Operations Salote Panapasa, and Welfare Officer Kelera Johns who toured the Western Division from Ba, Lautoka and Nadi to make the presentations.

Flood victim and Lautoka Women’s Corrections Centre custodial officer COC Natasha Tupou said they were all caught by surprise.

COC Tupou, who lives in Lautoka and looks after her elderly parents, lost over half of her belongings and furniture during the floods.

“We have to start from scratch and we are so thankful to the Commissioner and every one at our National Headquarters for helping to start us off,’’ she said

She said there was no time to stress about their situation because the FCS had to help the general public also in flood relief work.

“Our officers have been on the road with Police and Army in the last two weeks so our duty to the public at large has made us more appreciative of what we have.”

Deputy Commissioner Joe Kulinidilo on presenting the items said the initiative was borne out of the need for all men and women of the FCS to stand by each other in times of crisis.

“We have to stand by each other in such events and this makes us stronger as an organisation,’’ DCC Kulinidilo told the men and women.

“It is not much but we sincerely hope that it gets you and your family back on your feet.”
