Lawrence tries to keep goalscoring machine focused

Aaron Lawrence, coach of Frome Technical High School, is impressed with the performance of striker Giovani Mitto, who is the leading scorer in the 2018 ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup.

Mitto has so far scored nine goals in three games. Mitto, who was drafted in the national Under-15 set-up last year, scored hat-tricks in all three of Frome's games.

Frome beat Cambridge 5-1, Hopewell 5-2 and Merlene Ottey 5-0.

"His development has been great. The first time I saw him when I came to Frome he was playing wing back, but I turned him into a striker this season because he moves like one and has a good finishing touch about him," said Lawrence.

Lawrence said he is not aware whether his 16-year-old talisman has set any personal targets for the season. He said it is his hope that Mitto will improve every day.

"I never talk to them about targets ... I just tell him that each game he plays, he must score a goal for us," Lawrence said.

"If you score two or three, that's a plus, but put yourself into that position each game, be current and the man to drive the team," said Lawrence.

According to the coach, it is easy on the team when they have a goalscorer who is in form.

"We will continue to work and see if we can have him score many more. Personally, I don't want him to set a target. Just continue to be humble and work hard because I think he will score a lot more for us and even Jamaica too," he added.

"I always tell my players to not just settle for playing for school, always strive on wanting to make the national team representing your country. I think he is doing well so far and will get there one day," Lawrence said.
