Turkish authorities have tightened checks on foreigners' applications for a tourist residence permit: no card will be issued without proof of stay in the country as a traveler, Haberturk TV channel reported citing official sources.

"The control of applications for short-term residence permits in Turkey submitted by foreigners has been tightened - requests submitted inappropriately are rejected," the channel reported.

Foreigners arriving in Turkey for the purpose of education, reunification with family, to conduct scientific research, start a business, or possessing real estate must apply for the appropriate type of residence permit. The application is accompanied by the necessary documents, after successful verification the card is issued to the foreigner.

"Tourist residence permit is not granted to those foreigners who come to Turkey for the first time and apply, but have no proof that he is a tourist. In this regard, he is required to apply for the appropriate residence permit, after which an assessment is made as to whether the candidate meets the necessary conditions," the channel reports.

According to RIA Novosti, the Russians ranked first among foreigners on the number of residence permits obtained in Turkey in 2022, according to the Office for Migration of the country. According to the Office, more than 133 thousand Russians are in the country by tourist residence permit issued for a short period of up to a year.
