Housing starts dropped by 50% in Sweden in the first quarter as higher interest rates, rising construction costs and lower demand hit building firms, data showed on Thursday.

The Statistics Office said around 8,300 new apartments were started in the quarter against 16,675 in the same quarter a year earlier.
