'Very scary': Johnston apartment building fire displaces 12 adults, 6 children
NOW WITH BREAKING NEWS THAT BREAKING NEWS. MULTIPLE CREWS ARE ON THE SCENE OF A LARGE FIRE IN JOHNSTON. A TOWER OF DARK SMOKE COULD BE SEEN FOR MILES AS FIREFIGHTERS WORK TO GET IT UNDER CONTROL. CASEY RS. MARCUS MCINTOSH JOINS US LIVE NEAR GABLES WAY AND MARCUS. MORE THAN A DOZEN PEOPLE CAN’T GO BACK TO THEIR HOMES RIGHT NOW. THAT’S RIGHT. JODI MORE THAN A DOZEN PEOPLE AND AT LEAST SIX CHILDREN CANNOT GO BACK TO THEIR HOMES. THERE STILL FIREFIGHTERS ON SCENE HERE STILL, STILL STILL WATER BEING POURED ON THE FIRE. APPARENTLY SOME HOT SPOTS ARE BREAKING OUT EVERY NOW AND THEN. YOU SEE, THERE’S STILL A NUMBER OF FIREFIGHTERS HERE. THEY’VE BEEN HERE SINCE ABOUT 1030 THIS MORNING. SO FOR MORE THAN AN HOUR WE’RE GOING TO GO TO VIDEO FROM THE SCENE. WHEN WE FIRST GOT HERE, THERE WERE STILL SOME FLAMES COMING FROM THE APARTMENT BUILDINGS, THE TWO APARTMENTS RATHER, THAT WERE ON FIRE. AND THE FIRE, WE’RE TOLD, WAS CONFINED TO THE ATTIC. THE VIDEO YOU’RE SEEING RIGHT NOW IS OF WHERE THE FIRE WAS CONTAINED TO WHEN FIREFIGHTERS GOT HERE. WE ALSO HAVE PICTURES THAT WERE SENT IN TO US BY A RESIDENT OR A NEIGHBOR WHO SENT US PICTURES OF WHAT WAS GOING ON HERE. YOU KNOW, THERE’S A LOT OF ACTIVITY HERE BECAUSE OF WHAT HAPPENED EARLY THIS MORNING. JODI MENTIONED THAT THERE WERE SOME 1 PEOPLE WHO WERE EVACUATED, THE 12, 12, 12 ADULTS AND SIX CHILDREN WERE EVACUATED BY PEOPLE ON THE SCENE AND THEIR NEIGHBORS, AND THEY GOT EACH OTHER OUT. SO THAT’S A GOOD THING. THEY’RE OUT. ALL OUT. BY THE TIME FIREFIGHTERS GOT HERE OR WERE MOSTLY OUT BY THE TIME FIREFIGHTERS GOT HERE TO START FIGHTING THIS FIRE, AND THERE WAS A FIREWALL THAT KEPT THE FIRE FROM SPREADING INTO THE APARTMENT, IT WAS CONFINED TO THE ATTIC. NOW WE HAVE DRONE VIDEO THAT SHOWS THE BACK SIDE OF THE FIRE. THAT’S WHERE A LOT OF DAMAGE IS. AND WE’RE FORTUNATE THAT THOSE FIREWALLS WERE THERE BECAUSE IT KEPT THE FIRE FROM SPREADING FROM THE ATTIC, DROPPING DOWN INTO THE APARTMENTS BELOW. SO THERE’S IS A LOT OF FIRE DAMAGE TO THE ATTICS. BUT IN THE APARTMENTS BELOW, WE’RE TOLD IT’S MOSTLY CONFINED TO SMOKE AND WATER DAMAGE. AND ONCE AGAIN, THE PEOPLE WERE ABLE TO GET OUT BEFORE THE THE FIREFIGHTERS GOT HERE. SO THERE. AND WE’RE ALSO TOLD THAT NO ONE WAS INJURED. SO THAT IS ANOTHER GOOD THING ABOUT THIS FIRE NOW. WELL, IF THERE IS A GOOD THING ABOUT THIS FIRE, SORRY. FIREFIGHTERS TALK ABOUT HOW, YOU KNOW, IT WAS DAYTIME FIRE SO PEOPLE COULD GET OUT QUICKLY AND HAD NO PROBLEMS GETTING OUT THERE. ALSO TO GET ANIMALS OUT AS WELL. WE SPOKE WITH A FIREFIGHTER EARLIER TODAY WHO KIND OF DESCRIBED WHAT WAS GOING ON AND WHAT THEY HAD TO GO THROUGH. WE ALWAYS APPRECIATE THE HELP OF NEIGHBORS AND BEING GOOD CITIZENS TO EACH OTHER. SO THE EARLY NOTIFICATION AND HELPING PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THAT THERE WAS A FIRE WORKING MADE A DIFFERENCE HERE. LIKE I SAID, WHEN WE PULLED UP A LOT OF THE OCCUPANTS WERE WORKING ON NOTIFYING EVERYBODY AND THEN HELPING TO GET. WE HAD SEVERAL ANIMALS THAT WERE PULLED OUT BY A LOCAL CITIZENS AND ALSO FIREFIGHTERS AND THERE ARE A NUMBER OF OTHER FIRE MUNICIPALITIES OUT HERE. THERE WAS WINDSOR HEIGHTS, TAYLOR TOWNSHIP, ANKENY, URBANDALE, JOHNSTON, GRIMES, A NUMBER OF THEM OUT HERE TRYING TO FIGHT THIS FIRE AND GET IT KNOCKED DOWN BEFORE IT COULD SPREAD ANY FURTHER. ONCE AGAIN, I WANT TO POINT OUT THAT THERE WAS A FIREWALL IN THE ATTIC PREVENTING THE FIRE FROM SPREADING TO OTHER APARTMENTS AND TO THE APARTMENTS BELOW. WE’LL HAVE MUCH MORE ON THIS COMING UP TONIGHT AT FIVE AND SIX. UNTIL THEN, I’M MARC
