Colorado Springs Fire Officials Urge Residents to Prepare as Fire Danger Remains High
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - With hot, dry, and windy conditions expected to continue this week, the Colorado Springs Fire Department is warning residents to take wildfire risk seriously and take steps now to protect their homes and families.
“Right now we are in high fire danger, and we likely will be again tomorrow,” said Lt. Will Rogers with the Colorado Springs Fire Department. “Everything is drying out. That makes it a lot easier for a fire to start and spread.”
Lt. Rogers says wind is one of the most dangerous factors, especially on red flag days. That’s when fires can easily ignite and spread faster than people can react or sometimes run.
“In the fire out east just a couple weeks ago, it was moving faster than people could run,” Rogers explained. “That’s why we need everyone to be ready before a fire ever starts.”
What You Can Do:
- Clear dry brush and vegetation at least 30 feet from your home.
- Safely suppress and dispose of cigarette butts and barbecue coals and coal ash.
- Prepare a go-bag with essentials like clothes, medication, documents, food, and water.
- Have an evacuation plan and make sure your family knows what to do if an alert is issued.
- Sign up for evacuation alerts through local emergency management.
“Everyone in our city should have a go-bag ready,” Rogers added. “Colorado Springs has the largest wildland-urban interface in the country. Fires here can spread quickly, and evacuation orders need to be taken seriously.”
The fire department conducts annual spring drills and keeps equipment ready in anticipation of high-risk days. But they emphasize that community responsibility is key to preventing disaster.
